At a glance

Eight figures that show the scale of the flower business.

Floriculture includes the commercial production of flowers and ornamental plants, from annual bedding plants and flowering potted plants to perennials, cut flowers, foliage, and propagative materials. The 2024 federal census places those floral crops alongside nursery and specialty crops to provide a broader picture of American horticulture.

The figures on this page are intended as a practical reference for writers, researchers, floral professionals, and anyone looking for a current national snapshot. Every statistic comes from the same federal release, so definitions and reporting periods stay consistent. Individual figures have stable links for straightforward citation.

What this shows

Flowers are a large, varied American production category.

Annual bedding and garden plants, potted flowering plants, and herbaceous perennials all appear among the top horticulture commodities in the federal census. That mix reflects a broad industry serving home gardens, retail displays, events, landscapes, and interiors, not one single product category.

California, Florida, and Oregon led the nation in total horticulture sales. The census also found that family- or individually-owned operations made up 56% of operations, while corporate-owned operations accounted for 63% of sales.
